Remembering our ANZACs

Federal Member for Farrer, the Hon Sussan Ley, is encouraging residents of Farrer to attend their local ANZAC Day commemorations to reflect on the contributions of our servicemen and women in defending Australia

“ANZAC Day is a special day in the hearts of our nation,” Ms Ley said.

“On this day we give thanks to our defence forces, past and present, and we honour the fallen who gave their lives in the ultimate sacrifice during war.”

Ms Ley said it was important as a nation to pay tribute to those who served, returned, and died in the name of freedom and ensure that future generations know their story and acknowledge their sacrifice.

Ms Ley said ANZAC Day was a time for Australians to remember all those who served and died – not just at Gallipoli, but in the two World Wars, in Korea, Vietnam and other conflicts and peace operations, both past and present.

“These brave Australians have proven themselves worthy of our gratitude and honour.  We honour the unique character of our nation’s brave men and women, who did their duty, who gave their all,” she said.

“On ANZAC Day, we express our gratitude for our finest men and women and we are ever thankful for the freedom and opportunity their sacrifice has made.”

The ANZAC tradition was born on 25 April 1915 when Australian and New Zealand troops landed on the shores of Gallipoli.

On that first day, 2000 soldiers lay dead or wounded, and when the last troops were evacuated some eight months later, around 8000 Australians had lost their lives.

“Those who served at Gallipoli founded a tradition of courage, tenacity and mateship that has continued through generations of Australians who have served in subsequent conflicts,” Ms Ley said.

“Although all the original ANZACs have now passed on, the ANZAC tradition continues to be an important part of Australia’s identity and character.”
