Shorten black on employment figures

19-January-2012

The Federal Opposition believes today’s monthly job figures paint an unfortunate and much darker picture for the employment year ahead.

Coalition spokesperson for Employment Participation, Sussan Ley, says “even the Acting Treasurer put on his grim face for these December figures and that was before they even came out”.

In new data released this morning, total employment fell by 29,300 jobs, surprising many experts who had expected 10,000 jobs to be created. The loss left total job creation for 2011 virtually at zero.

Ms Ley said “both Wayne Swan and the Acting Treasurer keep waffling on about how Australia’s economy compares well against our global partners. Bill Shorten should know better than anyone, unless you’re going for a job in Greece or Somalia, it’s what happens
in your own backyard that really matters”.

“With an interest rate cut and retail spike up to Christmas, you would expect even a small  jump in all forms of employment. That happened the previous December when arguably
global economic conditions were much worse”.

“The economy is flat, small business is flat and employer confidence in the Labor
Government to turn it around is under that, if there is such as thing as below rock bottom”,
Ms Ley concluded.
