MEDIA STATEMENT
For immediate release
I am delighted to have been appointed Shadow Assistant Treasurer by Tony Abbott, Leader of the Opposition.
This is a key economic portfolio and it is a critical role in holding the Rudd government to account on its’ mismanagement of the nation’s finances in the lead up to the next election.
The Assistant Treasurer in Government works closely with the Treasurer on the design and administration of taxation law, with other responsibilities including the oversight of the Foreign Investment Review Board, the Productivity Commission and the Board of Taxation.
Having previously worked in taxation administration and also pursued specialist tax law qualifications, I am delighted to have the opportunity to contribute in a portfolio to which I feel so well suited.
With the Henry Taxation Review Committee due to report to the Government this month on the reform of Australia’s system of taxes and social security payments, the Government faces an enormous list of potential reform options.
Given that Mr Rudd has not learned the lessons of his stimulus spending; which is that long term growth comes out of productive spending (as opposed to cash splashes), the Opposition will not support tax reform proposals that work in the interests of the Rudd government, rather than the nation as a whole.
I look forward to working closely with Shadow Treasurer, Joe Hockey, building on his excellent work presenting the alternative government’s economic policy position.
