MEDIA Advisory
Member for Farrer, Sussan Ley, today delivered two important addresses to Federal Parliament, including a speech on Australia’s continued military Involvement in Afghanistan.
Part of ongoing open parliamentary debate, Ms Ley, affirmed her support for Australia’s current deployment but also emphasised the need to more clearly outline the strategic rationale for our presence in Afghanistan.
“We are not arguing the case with sufficient conviction. The Australian people need to know what is at stake, because the steady decline in public support for the war is of serious concern.”
Ms Ley expressed the view that “Australia has long term strategic interests in the future stability of Afghanistan. Perhaps the strategic imperatives are not as compelling as those of the United States, or those of their immediate regional neighbors, but sufficient to justify a substantial investment in their future”.

Also today – as a welcome curtain was officially drawn on drought in NSW, Ms Ley highlighted the plight of local towns and farming areas throughout the south east of the electorate now reeling from dramatic and unforeseen rain events of late last week.
The local Federal MP officially expressed a note of appreciation to each of the Local Government and Emergency Services personnel who assisted (and continue to assist) those in need, also urged communities effected by the deluge to seek out the available assistance being provided by both State and Federal Agencies.
